- A Patriot's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen (ISBN: 978-1-59523-115-4)
Books you may want to purchase/borrow, but you do not need to unless you want to:

Assignment #1
You must complete the FIRST FOUR (4) columns of the six column comparison chart comparing Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States (ISBN: 978-0-06-083865-2) and Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen's A Patriot's History of the United States (ISBN: 978-1-59523-115-4).
You do not need to read each book in its entirety (cover-to-cover), but you should read a vast majority of both books. You will need to definitely read specific chapters from each book in order to know, understand, and synthesize the necessary information to complete each row/column of the comparison chart. You will be graded on thoroughness and thoughtfulness of each response, overall level of completeness of your chart, and use of supporting evidence from each text. You will also be graded on your ability to discuss the information with you classmates. You will complete the remaining TWO (2) columns of the chart (The American Pageant and Who is Right?) after the start of the school year. WARNING-UPDATE: Columns 1 and 2 ask for you to describe how each book/author(s) present the issue. Your response should include facts, but it should also include the authors' opinions about each issue. For example, one book describes Columbus as a "hero," while the other describes him as a "harbinger of death." Make sure to highlight these types of statements from each author. Columns 3 and 4 ask for you to describe the similarities and differences between each book. This should be heavily based upon the facts your collected and the opinions of the authors'. If you have any questions, please email me immediately. ![]()

Assignment #3
Using the provided U.S. Presidents chart, list the years in office for each president, each president's political party (Federalist, Democratic-Republican, Whig, Union, Republican, or Democrat), one significant domestic event during his presidential term, and one significant international event during his presidential term.
UPDATE: Clarification - A domestic event is an event that occurred during the term of the president and may or may not involve the president directly, but did occur in the United States and directly involves the United States. An international event is an event that occurred internationally during the term of the president and either included the president or the United States directly. ADDITIONAL SUPPORT: William Henry Harrison was only president for one month. You should have information about his domestic affairs during his month as president (March 4-April 4, 1841), but you will likely have difficulty finding information about any international affairs. For this president only, in the international box, please list how the death of a president in office (Harrison was the first) affected the American people and how they established the succession policy. Optional: you may use the book Yo, Millard Filmore! (ISBN: 978-193521241-6) to help you complete your chart. You may also find this book helpful throughout the school year as you work to remember each presidents term in office, his portrait, and the sequence of all of the presidents (Washington-Obama). |
You will be graded on the accuracy of the information on your chart, the thoughtfulness/thoroughness of your selected domestic and international events, and the level of completeness of your chart.
